    碟片包装背面有段简短的电影剧情介绍：影片根据诺贝尔奖作家马奎斯的小说改编。记载了在二十世纪初，在南美洲的霍乱时期发生的一段爱情。故事围绕着两个年轻人，他们经历了生活婚姻事业疾病和死亡，最后终于走到一起……
    其实这是一个关于爱与等待的故事，正如封面上印着的那一句How long would you wait for love？
    影片中的主人公给出了他的答案，为了得到重新与她面对面的机会，他等待了五十一年九个月零四天，而为了获得重新真正与她在一起的机会，他苦苦守候了五十三年七个月零十一天。

    他与她在初见的一刹那便擦出了爱情的火花，而他们却一直没有交谈的机会。
    他只是一个地位卑微的电报员，而她的父亲是mule trader，比他有钱有地位。
    他们之间，似乎有着不可逾越的鸿沟。
    见她第一眼，他就像着了迷似地开始疯狂写情书，找机会给她，焦灼地等待她的回复。
    拉着小提琴，他寻找着写情书的灵感，寻找着向她表白的机会。
    “I have discovered the reason for my existence.”他剪下一小段头发，作为纪念物附在信中赠予她。
    她回复：“I think of you every moment. Now that spring is here, thoughts of you fill me with life. I will love you forever. Forever.”
    课上，写到这一句时，她情不自禁念出了“forever”一词，却被女修道院院长逮个正着，也正是院长日后向她的父亲告了密。

    他在一个夜晚溜进她家花园求爱。悠扬的小提琴曲吸引着她的到来。
    He said, “Crowned goddess, I made this vow. I swear to you my eternal fidelity and everlasting love, and I ask in all humanity to do me the great honor of marrying me. ”
    She hesitated, “You must give me the time.”
    But her aunt was apparently moved by his vow and persuaded her by saying, “Say yes! I may not be married, but I know about love. Even if you're dying of fear, even if you're sorry later because of whatever you do, you will be sorry all the rest of your life if you say no.”
    Then, she was brave to say that “Yes, very well. I will marry you, if you promise not to make me eat eggplant.”
    他的父亲怒不可遏，“You're much too beautiful to marry a telegraph operator. At your age, love is an illusion.”
    然后威胁他离开，说他是阻碍女儿嫁给富家子弟的最大障碍。

    “My beloved is returning soon. I have to keep myself pure. And I will only lose my virginity for love.”
    As he described, so the worst years of his life passed, he counted the eternal minutes one by one as he waited for her return. But he did not mind. He would keep watch for all of eternity.
    他在木椅上深深刻下了她的名字。
    “I stand vigil for her beside the lighthouse. My heart is like the sea--endless and everlasting. Even while it is as turbulent as the crashing waves.”
    后来的故事太过复杂。
    她再一次遇见他，却只轻描淡写说了一句，“Forget it. I just realized this moment when I saw you, what is between us is nothing more than an illusion. It clouded my eyes. I'm so sorry.”继而转身离去，只留给他一个背影。
    她遇见了后来的丈夫Doctor Urbino，这个男人亦对她一见倾心，重要的是他正是她父亲寻觅的满意女婿，有富裕的家境，显赫的地位。
    他的心伤透，遥远的距离无法停止他的想念。
    从此开始了周旋于女人之间的游戏人生，也开始在事业上逐渐有为。
